What would be a good ranch rifle?

I need a good reliable Ranch Rifle that will be a go-anywhere and do-anything rifle. I want a .308, bolt action, short barreled and compact, and have an great set of iron sights that are standard, and foward mounted optics. I have heard good things about the Ruger Gunsight Scout but want other views on it and other rifles.
